When your boiler stops working, the first thing most people do is pick up their phone and search “boiler repair near me”. Within seconds you get a list of names, but which one can you actually trust in your home? This guide explains how to find a safe, local and fairly priced boiler engineer in North & West London, and what you can check yourself while you wait.
1. Make Sure the Engineer Is Gas Safe Registered
In the UK, anyone who works on a gas boiler must by law be on the Gas Safe Register. This is the single most important check.
- Ask for the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. It shows their photo, licence number and the type of gas work they are qualified to do.
- Check the back of the card lists the work you need, for example gas boilers or central heating.
- You can confirm any engineer or company on the official Gas Safe Register website.
All engineers at A&C Heating and Plumbing Ltd carry a valid Gas Safe ID card and are happy to show it.
2. Check They Are Really Local
Many websites that rank for “near me” searches are call centres that pass your job on to whoever is free. A genuinely local company usually means a faster response and someone who knows the housing stock in your area, from Victorian terraces in Islington to new-build flats in Wembley.
- Look for a real business address and a direct phone number.
- Read recent Google reviews and check customers mention your area.
- Check the areas they cover. Ours are listed on our areas we cover page.
3. Ask About the Price Before They Come Out
A trustworthy engineer will tell you how they charge before booking. Ask:
- Is it an hourly rate or a fixed price?
- Is there a minimum charge or call-out fee?
- Are evening, night and weekend rates different?
- Are parts and VAT included?
We publish our rates openly: boiler repairs start from £90 per hour during standard hours (7am–6pm), with a one-hour minimum charge and clearly listed out-of-hours rates. Materials and VAT are extra. See the full breakdown on our boiler repair costs page.
4. Make Sure They Work on Your Boiler Type
Most engineers repair combi, system and regular boilers from the main brands, but it is worth mentioning your boiler make and model when you call. An engineer who knows the likely fault can often bring the right part and fix it on the first visit. Take a photo of the boiler’s data plate and any fault code on the display before you ring.
⚠️ If You Smell Gas, Call the Emergency Line First
A boiler repair company is not the first call if you smell gas. Call the free National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away, open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe to do so, and do not use light switches or anything that could cause a spark. Once the supply has been made safe, a Gas Safe engineer can repair the appliance.
What You Can Check While You Wait
Some breakdowns have simple causes. Without opening the boiler casing, you can safely check:
- Pressure: most combi boilers need around 1–1.5 bar on the gauge.
- Power and settings: the boiler is switched on, the timer is set correctly and the thermostat is turned up.
- Frozen condensate pipe: in cold weather, the plastic pipe running outside can freeze and stop the boiler.
- Prepayment meter: make sure there is credit for gas and electricity.
Our guides on how to reset your boiler safely and no hot water: common causes walk you through these steps. If the boiler still won’t work, or it shows a fault code again after a reset, it’s time to call an engineer.
